As a french customer, but lover of british movies, I was delighted to see that this american movie had a lot of british charm and subtlety, specially after the exposition of the characters, this part being a little "overdone" and the most "american" one.
There are many factors to that delighting surprise : two exceptional actors (Emma Thompson is my favorite star with Kristin Scott-Thomas), with a great complicity, London location, and a moving story without any soppiness.
A film to see and see again each time you need to feel real good after a sad or sucking day !

Hoffman and Thompson gell in tale of romance. It's probaly not for anyone under the age of thirty and possibly forty. You have to be over forty to empathize with the emotional bruising that is suffered by these two unlikely companions. Give it a go. Cuddle up next to someone with your cocoa and get that warm inner glow.

Well this was a bit of a surprise. I didn't expect to like this film before I watched it ,but it was a treat from start to finish.Dustin Hoffman plays a struggling New York jingle writer who flies to London for his estranged daughter's wedding. One the evening before the ceremony, his daughter skins him by telling him that she would prefer her stepfather to give her away. On the way back to the airport he gets delayed and misses his flight and subsequently gets sacked over the phone.Drowning his sorrows in the airport bar , he hooks up with an airport worker played by Emma Thompson and the pair set off on a whirlwind romance. "Last Chance Harvey" is a charming , old fashioned love story and there is great on screen chemistry between Hoffman and Thompson which carries this film throughout. Both play slightly sad ,resigned ,solitary individuals who have almost given up on the prospect of love but who find solace in each other's company. There are no torrid sex scenes or virulent arguments in this film thankfully ,just a pleasant love story featuring two great actors. A rarity these days.

When this came out, I went to see it at the pictures, and hoped against hope that it was better than Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino, which was a pitiful film to potentially be Dirty Harry's swan song. I wasn't disappointed; I was thrilled from start to finish. Typical Dustin Hoffman; a lovable character that he portrays very well, and every bit as good as his performances in Rain Man and Tootsie. If you liked Rain Man, you'll love this. A credit to the man, and proof, I hope and think, that Dustin has a few good films up his sleeve yet. Hoorah. I couldn't wait to own it on dvd to watch again and again. Emma Thompson is equally enjoyable as Dustin's romantic interest. Enjoy.
