Agnes Jaoui is a splendid figure in modern cinema, and the screen would be poorer without her. She has the knack of presenting human foibles and follies as they really are, within a framework of good storytelling and unbeatable acting.
In this tale of midlife crisis, Ms Jaoui's partner Jean-Pierre Bacri (who co-wrote the script) plays a factory owner faced with the task of learning English. Enter the fabulous Anne Alvaro as an actress who earns a bit extra by giving lessons ... the result: well, not an instant click, until -
But have a look at the film for yourself. Some lovely characters make up this bittersweet romance: a flute-playing chauffeur, a macho bodyguard, the girl who peddles dope and works in a local bar, the interior designer wife with appalling taste in soft furnishings, a gay artist and his actor boyfriend - a good section of French life is here, complete with well-constructed and witty dialogue, and ending with one of the most beguiling finales on screen.
(The use also of vintage Kathleen Ferrier in duet with Isabel Baillie is an inspired choice for incidental music and adds a delicious dimension to the whole.)
I think other reviewers have analysed the finer filmic points of 'Le Gout Des Autres' far better than I ever could, so let it just be said that this film is a joyous experience, and a prime example of why European films are so often more rewarding than mainstream Hollywood.
Recommended a thousandfold and a remarkable piece of ensemble playing - and trust me, you can watch it again and again - and still find something new to enjoy in this delightful comedy of manners and middle age.
May Agnes Jaoui continue to delight and surprise.

Great French comedy, with a touch of the Woody Allens, about a boorish tycoon who - to her horror - falls for the actress he has hired to teach him English. This directorial debut by Agnes Jaoui was Oscar-nominated for best foreign language film and won 4 Cesar Awards, including best film.

A French factory owner in Rouen falls for his English teacher and leaves his wife. A whimsical. understated plot involving a number of people in several sub-plots dealing with everyday situations in a matter-of-fact way, all touched with wry humour. Super acting and camera work.

Very interesting little film,a bit slow on until you get used to the pace, but certainly worth watching in the end, I am sure you would recognise these characters in people you know or even youself.
