I admit to be rather harsh in the overall rating of this otherwise great documentary. But his has to be said that the video is grainy throughout and the sound is just horrible by modern standards. A constant backround hissing sometimes underlayed with a deep tremor. Adding to the grainy images sometimes the lens is dust specled.
Just by the fact that David is in full hair and not the least bit grey should say something about the date of the original film material.
Still, you would need a high end TV and Sound system to be put off by it.
The content is as allways, by Sir D. Attenborough standards, superb. But not easily digested like Earth or Blue planet. It delwes more into the chemical and biogenetical issues of the matter and requires time and concentration to be fully apppreciated.
Ah, and one more point, it is 4:3. So that gives you quite a nice set of black bars, left and right on your 16:9 sized TV-set.
So, despite the great content, I still gave it "only" 3 stars to make a point. Because I would have liked to have known this beforehand.

David Attenborough is at his supreme best in this series. Teh attention to detail in the camera work is excellent. The Soundtrack has been selected carefully to enhance the screen action producing a series that is second to none in its field. I would whole heartedly recommend this dvd to anyone - not just nature lovers. We sit and watch this as a family and my 6 year old son is as engrossed as I am.
FANTASTIC

This is the first, most famous and, in my opinion, the best of all the wonderful David Attenborough's "Life" series. It's far too well-known to need me to go into what it's about, other than to say it is a chronological exploration and explanation of the development of life on earth. Big subject? You bet, but how fascinating, and just plain beautiful it is!
Amazingly enough, it was made in 1979, but apart from the youthful appearance of Mr. A, it has not dated at all. I was prepared, in this age of HD and digital TV, to find that the picture and colour quality was not up to modern standards. The very first programme is a bit ropy in the colour department, seeming a bit over-exposed and very turquoise and orange, but the rest are perfectly acceptable, and I guarantee you won't be disappointed. It was considered a ground-breaking series in its day, and I don't think it has ever been bettered.

ever since a small child i have watched and enjoyed David Attenborough on the television, when i saw this i just had to get it, in fact i got two one for me and one for my father who is an entomologist and who first introduced me to the David Attenborough nature programs. i have watched other nature documentrys but none of them come close to David Attenborough's style of teaching us about the world around us, if your looking for a wildlife program then i highly recomend anything with sir David Attenborough. 10 out of 10, i will also be buying the others that go with this to build the full set.
