Based on author Bryan Burrough's ambitious tome 'Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43', director Michael Mann (HEAT, LAST OF THE MOHICANS) has crafted a sprawling historical crime drama that follows the efforts of top FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale – BATMAN BEGINS, AMERICAN PSYCHO) in capturing notorious bank robber John Dillinger. A folk hero to the American public thanks to his penchant for robbing the banks that many people believed responsible for the Great Depression, charming bandit Dillinger (Johnny Depp – PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN) was virtually unstoppable at the height of his criminal career; no jail could hold him, and his exploits endeared him to the common people while making headlines across the country. J. Edgar Hoover's (Billy Crudup – WATCHMEN, ALMOST FAMOUS) FBI was just coming into formation, and what better way for the ambitious lawman to transform his fledgling Bureau of Investigation into a national police force than to capture the gang that always gets away? Determined to bust Dillinger and his crew, which also included sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham – DOGHOUSE, THIS IS ENGLAND) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi – THE GIFT, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN), Hoover christened Dillinger the country's very first Public Enemy Number One, and unleashed Purvis to take them down by whatever means necessary. But Purvis underestimated Dillinger's ingenuity as a master criminal, and after embarking on a frantic series of chases and shoot-outs, the dashing agent humbly surmised that he was in over his head. Outwitted and outgunned, Purvis knew that his only hope for busting Dillinger's gang was to baptize a crew of Western ex-lawmen as official agents, and orchestrate a series of betrayals so cunning that even America's criminal mastermind wouldn't know what hit him. Marion Cotillard, Channing Tatum, and Stephen Dorff co-star.

As a Michael Mann fan (i have all his movies and sound tracks on dvd/ CD except for The Keep), i must confess i found Public Enemies to be a complete snoozefest with absolutely no character development or proper story line. An example of character development (ha ha) whereby Depp picks up his new lover with 1 sentence - "I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars... and you. What else do you need to know?" Thats it. She is his forever.
Public Enemies might have broken the record for most time checks (me glancing at the clock on the mantel piece) during a film. I can't believe how poor the sound mixing was, and the entire movie had a amateurish High Definition digital look/ feel to it.
I was more than happy to pull out my Bonnie and Clyde dvd afterwards, and watch it again, as it has everything from great acting, direction, humour and violence all in a true story - not bad for a 1967 gangster movie. I was hoping Michael Mann would improve on Mumbles Vice (2006- Colin Farrell , Jamie Foxx), but it seems that Mann has used all the Miami Vice bad habits again here in Public Enemies, ie, no character development, inaudible dialogue and an unoriginal story line.
Public Enemies.
More like Public Enemas.

I dont normally watch gangster films but its johnny depp so you have to. in ways it was similar to blow. i really enjoyed it the plot is in two parts his work as a bank robber, his dark side and then this amazing gentleman with his lady. You fall in love with his character and the suspends builds and there is only one possible outcome to his life style an emotional ending.

This is a dull as ditch water movie, proving again Johnny Depp has no talent with his typically lifeless performance. Buy the John Milius version it's much more authentic. Comments elsewhere about the age suitability of Warren Oates and Ben Johnson to play their roles are irrelevant.
